Angela

Artykuł pochodzi z pisma "Guardian"

A convincing and often gripping story of the Sicilian Mafia in the 1980s, free of cliches and avowedly based on a true story. Roberta Torre's picture looks gritty, grainy, often shot in intimate close-up as the characters push their way through the crowded streets of Palermo, the ordinary faces of passers-by swimming up into the lens like a vividly remembered dream.
Donatella Finocchiaro plays Angela, wife to an older mobster and mother of a teenage daughter - and still beautiful. She is employed to deliver drugs under the cover of running a shoe shop: bags of cocaine are stashed in boxes of shoes. But Angela suffers from an ambiguous, melancholy discontent. She feels excluded from the main business, once actually getting a door shut in her face, like Diane Keaton's character in The Godfather, and is clearly unsure if she would prefer to take over, or simply run away for ever. It is at this moment that her husband hires handsome young hot-head Masino (Andrea Di Stefano) to be his sidekick in the distribution system, and Angela falls for him, crucified by a sense of betrayal.
There is a tough sinew in the way Torre presents these events, a mastery of tone that falters only at the very end when we are asked to believe a very strained, romantic-sounding tragedy for Angela, forever pining for an absent lover. I have to say I wondered what really happened to Masino and how exactly the mobsters got turned in to the police. But this is a story told with great pungency and urgency. It has only one eccentric touch. For some reason Torre has omitted to include the motor-engine audio track for her scenes when characters are riding in cars. Instead, their (studio-bound) vehicles pitch and roll silently during the dialogue, like boats on an open sea. But the dream-like effect of this isn't entirely inappropriate.
